ImageThe demand of the processing industry for potatoes is increasing constantly. Thus it is also accompanied with expansion of the storage capacities, in order to be able to produce all the year round products, e.g. French fries and chips.

Modern storage properties for quality potatoes meets high demands, since their selling price and usability in winter and spring depends on this.

ImageAfter the harvest the potatoes have natural sprout dormancy. In this period no germinating arises. The time of dormancy depends on sort and is subject to environmental influences. The natural sprout dormancy is followed by constrain dormancy. At storage it is important that natural dormancy phase is extended as long as possible and additional conditions have to be set, which prevent sprouting.

The temperature in the storage has significant influence on the sprout dormancy. The temperature depends on the intended purpose of the potato ( e.g. food potato 4 - 6° C, industrial potato 5 - 8° C, chips potato 7 - 12° C) . For chips potato the temperature control is not sufficient alone, since they cannot be stored at favourable very low-temperatures.

Germinating of potatoes is carried out slowly and at the beginning not recognizable. Worldwide millions of tons are lost annually through germination.

ImageThe problems araise particularly during the long-term storage. Apart from cooling storage ( connected with relatively high air humidity) , the chemical sprout control is an ideal solution for optimal and sprout-free storage of potatoes.
